NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Earlier this month we told everyone about the NEW YEAR, NEW YOU contest that we were having. The contest included color, cut, make up application and free products to help that lucky winner keep her look.  We picked a winner last week -- her name is Melanie Trotman and she probably has the sweetest husband on the planet! He wrote a beautiful email to us here at La Bella explaining why Melanie deserves this make over and we were so touched by his story that we chose her.

Melanie is the mother of a two year old little girl and takes care of her mother. She also works full time but her hours conists of the graveyard shift. She wanted something easier for her to do than just wearing her hair up all the time. She did have some highlights in her hair that I could tell had been growing out for quite some time. I suggested that we make her a caramel blonde to brighter up her face and cut her hair into a layered bob since her hair is so fine and flat, she will be to just blow dried it in the morning and go! A simple but elegant hairstyle for a mother on the go. Let's face it: the BOB never goes out!

After the highlight and haircut, I gave her make up application. She has very nice skin but it's just a bit on the dry side. I first prepped her with SPF 15 daily moisturizer then I applied powder foundation because liquid dries the skin out more. I put brown eyeshawdow just on the corner of her eyelids to bring out the blue in her eyes then I blended the brown with a soft shade of purple. Then came the mascra in black and some rosy lipstick because, look at her, she has wonderful full lips!

Melanie loved her new make over and so did her husband! She got to take home UNITE 7seconds Leave-In Condtioner, UNITE SessionWhip, which will help with the volume at the crown of her head, and a round brush to help achieve this look at home!

See you next week!

Beat Winter's dry hair

Today on the beauty blog I am going to help you understand why hair is so dry during the winter season. I will tell the secrets to keeping your hair soft and full of moisture and explain what makes the hair dry out  during this season.

Harsh conditions like cold and wind strip the cuticle (the outermost layer of the hair strand), making it rough and susceptible to dryness and static. Be gentle with wet locks. Dehydrated hair is more likely to break when brushed. To protect hair after showering, lightly spray ends with a leave-in conditioner (Unite 7seconds leave-in sold at La Bella) to help make strands more pliable. Then comb tresses gently with a wide-tooth comb and blot with a soft towel (vigorous rubbing can cause further breakage). Shampoo every other day. This helps prevent the natural scalp oils from being stripped. On days when you don't shampoo, give your scalp a thorough rinsing and massage with your fingers; it's enough to keep hair clean and your scalp invigorated -- even for oily types or after a sweaty session at the gym.

Smooth your hair's cuticle. Dry, jagged cuticles reflect light poorly, making strands susceptible to winter dullness. Ending your shower with a cold-water rinse and/or your blow-dry session with a blast of cool air (most dryers have a cool setting) can help smooth and seal the cuticle. Also look for products with labels that contain words like "illuminate or "shine." (Our favorite: Shina drops by UNITE.) Using just a drop, rub evenly on the hands and work through the hair moving from back to front and avoiding the roots. Another option is to get a glaze or gloss treatment at La Bella Hair Studio. Have a lot of static in your hair even after you have shampooed, contioned and blow dried? My rememdy for stactic: DRYER SHEETS! That simple, just carry some dryer sheets (whichever scent you prefer) and when you feel your hair standing up on ends, rub the dryer sheet over your hair and toss! Beware of hats which can also cause static. Worried about the warmth escaping? Wear a cotton scarf under your wool hat to prevent static.

Also deep conditioners can help you this season for the over-processed and fragile hair types. We offer deep condition treatments for only $20 added to any service or just $30 for just the treatment.  A deep condtiioner will put that moisture back into the hair by applying heat to the treatment for 20 minutes. The heat opens up the cuticle and seals the moisture back in.

I hope all these tips help you fight that winter dry hair!  See you next week for more tips!
