Ask Lauren

Good Morning! I hope everyone enjoyed the snow over the weekend. Today on the beauty blog will be the "Ask Lauren" segment, which is where I will answer questions to all of you who posted them. I was very excited to see that people are starting to catch on to this!

Now for the questions. Jenny asks, "What are some easy updos for the holidays?" That is an excellent question, Jenny! The holiday season is full of parties, events, family gatherings and work functions. Who wants to have the same hair style every time you go? I know that I don't. Well, Jenny, there is a number of styles you can do but it depends on your hair length. If you have short or medium length, I would recommend the finger wave. It's very easy to do with a curling iron and those retro, early-Hollywood looks are back in. Make sure your hair is freshly washed and dried then follow steps 1-4 below.

 1. With side part take two inch sections of hair and use your curling iron almost like a stamp on the hair shaft.
2. Stamp waves down the shaft of the hair.
3. Stamp one wave with the clamp of the iron on top of hair and the next, turn the clamp underneath the hair and stamp.
4. Alternate clamp on top and clamp on bottom down entire hair shaft.
Casual Holiday Hair styles

If your hair is on the longer side, take the longer sections and twist the hair to come together in the back of the head and pin with bobby pins. You can add hair gems for more glam (can be purchase at drugstores).

Jenny if you have really long hair and the finger wave is too much for you to do, you can never go wrong with the bun. There are many different ways to do the bun, follow steps 1-4 for the classic bun. There are some variations mentions as will to spice it up.
  1. Smooth all of your hair back into a low ponytail and secure with a hair band.
  2. Separate your ponytail into two sections.
  3. Twist one section around the hair band and pin the ends under the ponytail.
  4. Repeat with the second section, twisting hair the opposite way.
Variations:
You can leave your bangs out and style them instead of pulling hair all the way back.
If you have naturally wavy hair, allow hair to air dry to its naturally wavy state before styling for a different look that is full of texture.

You can leave some strands of hair out and curl them for more of a romantic messy look. You can also smooth the hair back as tightly as you can for more of the sophiscated look.  Add small braids for a fun, up-beat look!

I hope these options help you for you holiday event.

Question #2. Brenda asked if she should let her gray hair grow out or keep coloring it.

I think this a really big concern of women when you hit that certain age because you sure don't look old and you don't feel it but thanks to genetics your hair doesn't want to produce the hair color pigment!
Now there are pros and cons for going gray as well as for keeping up on color.

If you choose to grow out the gray it will be low maintance and save you money! Which is something we can all agree on: that saving money is a plus. Unforunately I see more of a downside to going completely gray. Some factors are that no matter what your age is, gray hair tends to age a person 5-10 years. The texture of gray hair is rougher and dryer. Gray hair can also get a yellow cast so I would recommend purple shampoo. I know that it sounds like a lot of  cons with going gray but I have seen some beautiful gray hair in my career! So they are some good sides to it too.

If you choose to keep coloring you hair, you will have to keep up with it because gray hair is resistant that normal hair color. You will probably be coloring your roots every 4 to 5 weeks, which can be on the pricey side.  The good thing about coloring your hair is you stay looking younger. My mother for example is 54 years old and she colors her hair (well I do it for her) but my mother doesn't look a year over 40. I'm sure that has to do with her healthy diet and her addictions to Olay skincare products but coloring her grays helps a lot.

Not to choose sides but I would recommand to keep coloring your hair, Brenda, if it is the younger looking side that you want. If you don't care about that then, yes, letting your natural gray grow out would be the low maintance thing to do and it would make your husband happy. But if you want to look a couple year younger and save the gray for retirment I would keep coloring it.

I do hope that my suggestions help you in your desicion.
